Second Grade Reading Skills

We will be using a new reading series called Wonders. Below are the skills outlined in each unit. You will notice that many of the skills are revisited throughout the year.

Unit 1

Comprehension Skills : key details, character, setting ,events

Vocabulary Strategies: inflectional endings (s,es,ed,ing), root words, context clues

Unit 2

Comprehension Skills: character, setting, plot, main topic and key details

Vocabulary Strategies: prefixes, suffixes, multiple-meaning words

Unit 3

Comprehension Skills: author's purpose, character,setting, plot (sequence), main idea, key details

Vocabulary Strategies: similes, compound words, synonyms, antonyms, prefixes

Unit 4

Comprehension Skills: compare and contrast, cause and effect, theme

Vocabulary Strategies: compound words, context clues, similes, root words

 

Unit 5

Comprehension Skills: point of view, sequence, problem and solution, cause and effect

Vocabulary Strategies: suffixes, idioms, synonyms, homophones, multiple-meaning words

Unit 6

Comprehension Skills: theme, author's purpose, main idea and key details, problem and solution, point of view

Vocabulary Strategies: context clues, paragraph clues, Greek and Latin roots, metaphors
