2nd Grade Social Studies Curriculum

Trimester 1

 

Citizenship: Rights and Responsibilities                         

  • Citizens contribute to a community’s government through leadership and service.

  • Citizens recognize problems in the community and work together with elected officials to solve them.

​

Voting and Elections

  • Citizens elect mayors, governors, presidents, senators and representatives to make and enforce laws.

​

Jobs, Goods and Services

  • A community requires the interdependence of many people performing a variety of jobs and services to provide basic needs and wants. The government provides services using the money paid in taxes.

  • People work and save money to buy goods and services. They need special skills and knowledge to perform their jobs.

  • Goods are items that people make or grow for consumers to buy. Services are jobs that people do for others. The prices of goods are determined by production costs, including capital goods and human capital.

 

Trimester 2

 

Communities

  • A community is a population of various individuals in a common location. It can be characterized as urban, suburban, or rural. Population density and use of the land are some characteristics that define and distinguish types of communities.

  • People share similarities and differences with others in their own community and with other communities.

Trade

  • Many food products (crops) are produced in rural areas, where manufactured goods are produced more commonly in urban areas. They are transported to other areas in a variety of ways.

  • Some foods only grow in specific climates. These products must be imported from other places. The cost of production is another reason that goods are sometimes bought from other countries.

​

Maps

  • Maps, globes, and other geographic models identify cultural and environmental characteristics of places.

  • The equator, northern and southern hemispheres, continents and poles are found through the use of maps and globes.

​

Landforms

  • Landforms change over time due to weathering, erosion and human impact.

  • Geography, weather, and climate shape where and how urban, suburban, and rural communities develop and how they sustain themselves.

  • People in different countries have different traditions and cultures.

 

Trimester 3

Early American History

  • The United States is founded on the principals of democracy, and these principles are reflected in all types of communities. Our nation began as a colony, became a country, and expanded west as it grew. It is comprised of people from many different nations.

  • People learn about history from primary sources and secondary sources.

​

Famous Americans

  • Presidents and other important American figures have shaped our country. Topics  introduced for President’s Day, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, etc…

​

American Symbols

  • American symbols help us to develop and share a sense of history, community and culture.

​
